Introducing Leon Lens: Hans Wegner

At Leon, we believe that the products we make are deeply intertwined with beautiful living spaces. That's why we're excited to introduce "The Leon Lens” – a monthly series where we'll feature someone who inspires the products we provide, whether that be an artist, interior designer, architect, etc. who share our passion for quality, craftsmanship, and creating spaces that resonate.

These talented individuals inspire us with their unique perspectives, innovative approaches, and dedication to creating solutions that are both functional and beautiful. Our goal is to not only share their work but also provide a deeper look into how they’ve helped inspire Leon's brand identity and the products we create.

  • The intersection of art and technology: How creativity informs innovation and the process of intertwining the two.

  • The importance of thoughtful design: Exploring the impact of aesthetics and functionality in our everyday lives.

  • The value of quality craftsmanship: Recognizing the importance of creating products built to last.

For our first feature we’ll be diving into Hans Wegner, a Danish furniture designer, who contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design.

The Leon Lens: Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner, often dubbed "The Master of Wood," is a legend in the world of design, his creations gracing homes and museums worldwide. At Leon, we admire Wegner's philosophy: a dedication to craftsmanship, the pursuit of simplicity in design, and a respect for the natural materials he worked with.

Instrumental in helping to establish the now well-known mid-century Danish Modern aesthetic, Wegner coined the term “Organic Functionality" to describe his approach to design. He is best known for his many classic chair designs including the Wishbone Chair and the Round Chair, both of which can still be found in many homes around the world.

The chair should not only be beautiful, it should also be comfortable to sit in.

Wegner’s fascination with woodwork began at a young age as a child apprentice for a cabinet workshop. This led to him to attend the School of Arts and Crafts' carpentry program in Copenhagen. Shortly into his education, he was approached to start designing furniture for the Aarhaus City Hall, and also began collaborating with master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen. This allowed him to begin experimenting in his design style and eventually led him to become a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts, and to open his own design studio in 1943.

His international success came to fruition in the late 1940s, most notably with the Wishbone chair created for Carl Hansen & Søns, which is still produced by the company to this day.

A Focus on Functionality and Simplicity

Wegner's designs, while undeniably eye-catching, were never born of mere aesthetics. He famously stated, "The chair should not only be beautiful, it should also be comfortable to sit in."

This focus on functionality is a cornerstone of his philosophy, a principle that resonates deeply with us at Leon. We believe that technology should enhance your life, not complicate it.

The Importance of Natural Materials

Wegner's profound respect for wood is evident in every piece he created. He understood the inherent beauty of natural materials, their textures, and the warmth they bring to a space.

At Leon, we share Wegners’ appreciation for materiality and intentionality: carefully selecting craftsman quality wood and finishes to create a timeless aesthetic that complements any interior. One of our most popular offerings, The Edge Media Frame, was inspired by mid-century furnishings like Wegner’s.
