Technology as Architecture: Two Design-Forward Ann Arbor Homes by Jane Henderson Interiors

For Ann Arbor–based designer Jane Henderson, great interiors are defined by intention—where every detail, from foundational millwork to integrated electronics, serves a distinct purpose. Across two stylistically contrasting local residences—Burgundy Maximalist and Organic Modern—Jane Henderson Interiors partnered with Leon Speakers to prove a shared philosophy: high-performance audio and video should feel like a natural extension of the architecture, never an interruption.

The Vision

Whether designing a dramatic, moody cocktail lounge or a light-filled minimalist retreat, Principal Designer Jane Henderson, alongside designers Stephanie Henderson and Giselle Singer, approaches technology as an architectural element rather than an afterthought. Both residences required dedicated media solutions that could deliver reference-grade entertainment while respecting zero-tolerance design margins.

Project One: Burgundy Maximalist — Ann Arbor, MI

Designed as an intimate lower-level entertaining space, Burgundy Maximalist channels the moody indulgence of an upscale boutique cocktail bar. Rich jewel tones, layered textures, sculptural brass lighting, and a linear fireplace set an immersive stage built to transition seamlessly from lively gatherings to quiet film screenings. “We wanted this room to feel like an experience,” Henderson explains. “A place that could transition effortlessly from quiet movie nights to lively entertaining.”

  • The Challenge: In a room defined by bold ornamentation, the media wall demanded strict visual discipline. Anchored by geometric wall tiles, the television and audio setup had to sit in exact vertical alignment with the linear fireplace below—with zero margin for error before final wallcoverings were hung.

  • The Solution: A Heritage TV Frame with Horizon Audio was built tailored to the exact width and depth of the fireplace composition. Rather than reading as standalone AV equipment, the system acts as a singular architectural anchor that balances the drama of the room with clean, uninterrupted symmetry.

Project Two: Organic Modern

By contrast, Organic Modern is an exercise in serenity, restraint, and natural materiality. Featuring a soothing palette of warm neutrals, white oak millwork, large-format stone slabs, and soft curved furnishings, the main living space required technology that could quietly recede into the background.

  • The Challenge: The focal wall—clad in a monolithic stone slab—left nowhere to hide cabling, uneven depths, or mismatched proportions. Technology needed to be integrated early into the architectural planning to preserve the clean, continuous face of the stone.

  • The Solution: A Heritage Edge TV Frame in Oak and matching Tonecase Bar delivered a flush, built-in installation perfectly scaled to the fireplace and surrounding millwork. The precision metal frame provides subtle definition, elevating the display into a cohesive design feature that preserves the tranquil visual rhythm of the room.

The Impact

Across both homes, the collaboration demonstrates how early coordination between interior design and custom AV manufacturing removes the friction between aesthetics and acoustic performance.

"Leon allows us to treat technology as part of the architecture, not an afterthought. Their flexibility, attention to proportion, and finish quality make it possible to deliver spaces where design and performance truly coexist. We’ve specified Leon on several projects because of their consistent quality and design versatility—their ability to tailor dimensions, finishes, and performance to fit our design intent makes them a go-to for luxury residential work."
